 ABDOMINAL SURGERY

  • Gallbladder removal (Cholecystectomy)
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed with small incisions, a television camera, and long instruments.
  • Open cholecystectomy is performed when a laparoscopic is contraindicated.
  • Open cholecystectomy with common bile duct exploration when an obstruction is present.
  • Nissen Fundoplication (Anti-reflex repair) The fundus of the stomach is mobilized and wrapped around the lower esophageal sphincter and sutured in place.
  • Ulcer Repair done for bleeding or perforated ulcers.
  • Appendectomy removal of the appendix.
  • Splenectomy (Spleen removal) usually done following trauma.
  • Hernia repair of a protrusion of tissue or a portion of an organ through an abnormal opening. May be initial or recurrent, reducible, incarcerated or strangulated.
  • Inguinal or groin may be left or right and into the inguinal canal.
  • Incisional is occurring through an old abdominal incision.
  • Femoral is protrusion of a loop of intestine into the femoral canal.
  • Ventral is through the abdominal wall.
  • Infant inguinal at 6 months to 5 years.
  • Hydrocele is a collection of fluid especially in the tunica vaginalis of the testis or along the spermatic cord.
  • Spermatocele is cystic distention of the epididymis or rete testis, containing spermatozoa.
  • Umbilical is herniation into part of the umbilicus.
  • With mesh some hernias may be repaired with placing mesh in the defect.
